Lei cha kolo mee + yong tau foo at a Hakka stall ($4.80 + $1.50)!
Hakka thunder tea (lei cha) kolo mee — yellow noodles with chopped long beans, peanuts, mei cai, minced chicken, mushrooms; lei cha green soup on the side; stuffed YTF. $4.80 + $1.50.
Back at the Hakka stall for the herbaceous variation — lei cha (thunder tea) kolo mee with stuffed YTF on the side. $4.80 + $1.50. 😋
What was on the tray ($6.30 total):
- A bowl of yellow ramen-style noodles topped with the classic lei cha line-up: chopped long beans, toasted peanuts, minced chicken, dark mei cai (preserved mustard greens), mushrooms and a small mound of chopped basil / lei cha herbs.
- A side cup of green lei cha soup — the signature herbal-tea broth made from blended basil, mint, peanuts and tea. Pour it over the noodles to convert them into thunder-tea kolo mee.
- A small dish of stuffed yong tau foo ($1.50) — bean curd with minced fish paste, topped with chopped scallions and sesame in dark soy sauce.
Poured the lei cha soup over the noodles, mixed everything — the herbal green flavour was unmistakably Hakka. Not for everyone but if you like the lei cha cult, this is the noodle version.
Total: $6.30 for noodles + YTF.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Herbal, healthy, peculiar in the best way. Lei cha lovers will be sold. Will be back for the rice version too. 😍👍🏼
