Tze char dinner at a new spot on the block ($20.50)!
Tze char dinner at a new opening — KL-style dark Hokkien mee, fried bee hoon, sliced fish porridge with fried fish skin. $20.50 for the meal.
Checked out a new tze char spot on the block — three plates split between us. $20.50. 😋
What we ordered ($20.50 total):
- KL-style Hokkien mee — thick yellow noodles braised in deep dark sweet soy sauce, with pieces of pork and a sprinkle of pork lard. Properly stained black in the right way.
- Fried bee hoon — wok-fried rice vermicelli, slightly orange-tinted from the sauce, topped with a crispy egg omelette ribbon. Smelled like proper wok hei.
- A claypot of sliced fish porridge — silky white congee with sliced fish, fried fish skin for the crispy top notes, fried shallots, and chopped scallions. Comfort in a pot.
The KL Hokkien mee was the standout — that proper dark, slightly chewy texture is hard to find done well in SG. Fish porridge was generous with the fish skin chips.
Total: $20.50. Reasonable tze char-restaurant pricing for three dishes.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. New spots are always a gamble but this one paid off. Will keep an eye on this for the next visit. 😍👍🏼
