Xing Hua lor mee at a hawker stall ($4.50)!
Heng Hua / Xing Hua style lor mee at a hawker stall — yellow noodles in clear seafood broth with prawn, cockle, seaweed, peanuts and greens. $4.50.
Tried something different — Xing Hua (Heng Hua) lor mee at a hawker stall, $4.50. Putian-style noodles, light and seafood-forward. 😋
What was in the red bowl ($4.50):
- A nest of fresh yellow noodles sitting in a clear, slightly milky seafood broth — clean, peppery, properly umami from prawn shells.
- A whole prawn with head still on, lying right on top.
- A few cockles for the heritage touch.
- A piece of fried fish cake with crispy edges.
- A pile of fried peanuts for that classic Heng Hua peanut top note.
- Crumbly seaweed bits for that signature ocean fragrance.
- A bunch of choy sum stems for the green.
Heng Hua-style noodles are lighter and broth-focused — different from the gloopy lor mee you might expect. The peanuts + seaweed combination is the signature Putian touch.
Total: $4.50. Hawker pricing.
Overall: 4 / 5. Broth was light but the seafood flavour came through. The peanut crunch was unexpected but worked. Different enough from regular noodles to be interesting. 😍👍🏼
