Hen Over My Waffles is the casual chicken-and-waffles spot that pivoted hard into delivery during lockdown and stayed there into phase 2. The signature plate is exactly what the name promises — fried chicken (boneless, well-seasoned, crispy battered) over fluffy waffles, with a maple-syrup drizzle and a small pot of hot sauce on the side.
The chicken delivers the headline. Crispy buttermilk-battered, slightly spiced, juicy inside. The kind of fried chicken that holds up surprisingly well to delivery because the batter is thick enough to maintain crunch. Waffles are the Belgian-style with deep square pockets, soft inside, golden outside. The maple-syrup-and-hot-sauce combination is the proper way to eat the plate — sweet meets savoury meets fried.
My One Aioli is the Spanish-tapas-meets-Singapore spot. We ordered sides to complement the chicken — patatas bravas (fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce and aioli), Spanish-style fried calamari, and a small portion of olives.
The patatas bravas were the highlight. Crispy fried potatoes, paprika-and-tomato sauce on top, garlicky aioli swirled through. The kind of side dish that competes with the main for attention.
Calamari was the lighter component — battered rings, lemon wedge on the side, properly tender inside.
$25.10 for the spread is fair multi-restaurant delivery pricing. The whole thing took two separate delivery riders but the apps coordinated the windows so both arrived within 10 minutes of each other.
Cross-cuisine delivery is a phase-2 development worth embracing.
