TGIF curry rice lunch at an Aljunied hawker ($4.50)!
Hainanese-style curry rice at an Aljunied hawker stall — fried pork chop, braised cabbage, minced pork patty and a runny sunny-side-up egg drowned in curry gravy. $4.50.
Friday office lunch hawker run — Hainanese-style curry rice at an Aljunied stall. $4.50, no nonsense. 😋
What was in the bowl ($4.50):
- A bed of white rice drowned in curry gravy — that signature orange-red Hainanese curry style, mild and savoury, not coconut-heavy.
- Fried pork chop chunks at the bottom — crispy crust soaking up the curry.
- A scoop of braised cabbage for the green side.
- A fried minced pork patty (zha rou) tucked in for extra protein.
- Crowning glory: a sunny-side-up egg with a perfectly runny orange yolk, pierced and oozing into the curry.
Mix it all together = comfort food in a bowl. The egg yolk + curry gravy combination is what makes Hainanese curry rice immortal.
Total: $4.50. Friday lunch hawker pricing magic.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Pork chop stayed crispy under the gravy, the curry had a hint of spice, and that yolk was perfectly runny. Old-school value. 😍👍🏼
